Q: Where do I purchase my fishing license and how much does it cost?

A: Go to www.adfg.alaska.gov, then click on Sport Fishing. Then click Buy License Online; you’ll see all the options available. Your other option is to fill out the license part of the Pre-Arrival Packet and we will obtain the license for you.

 

Q: If I decide to rent a car and drive from Anchorage, what are the roads like, and how long will it take to get to Captain Steve’s Fishing Lodge?

A: The scenery along the roads are beautiful. It is approximately 185 miles and will take about 3-1/2 – 4 hours, unless you stop to see the glacier, Turnagain Arm, with the 2nd largest tides in the world, or the wildlife viewing areas, the beautiful rivers, lakes and five volcanoes…then, it might take all day.

 

Q: Do I need to bring my own tackle?

A: No, all tackle, rods, reels, etc. are provided for you. However, if you rent a car and fish on your own at night, you may need to purchase some tackle. You can always bring your own rods, reels, etc., but check with us first to make sure you have the same type of line. This will ensure the lines are in sync when out on the boats.

 

Q: I’m on a special diet and allergic to certain foods. What should I do?

A: If you let us know in advance, we will have our chef prepare special menu items for you. Be sure to include your meal preferences and/or allergens when making your reservations.

 

Q: Are there a lot of insects near the Lodge?

A: At the lodge, and on the saltwater boats, there are very few insects. However, when you step into the brush or on our flyout trips, there are insects. We keep insect repellent on hand.

 

Q: Should I bring my own boots or rain gear?

A: If you have a favorite set, then sure, bring your own. But if you don’t have any, we provide these for you.

 

Q: Is there a laundry facility nearby?

A: Yes, there are coin-operated washers and dryers at the Lodge.

 

Q: I don’t need much fish; can I catch and release?

A: Of course! You can tell us how many pounds you want to take home and we’ll keep you informed on approximately how much meat you have processed.

 

Q: Who does the fish processing?

A: Captain Steve’s Fishing Lodge processes all fish in-house. We filet, skin, cut (1 – 1-1/2 lbs.) pieces, vacuum pack, label, freeze and box all the fish (within your legal limits) that you want to take home.

 

Q: What is the weather like? Is it always raining?

A: Our summers are mild with temperatures ranging from 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is normal, but we don’t receive much rain. If you check the www.weatherchannel.com, you’ll see that our annual precipitation is about 18.25 inches per year, as compared to other places in Alaska and British Columbia that receive 100-200+ inches annually.

 

Q: Do you have wireless internet (Wi-Fi) so I can check my email?

A: Yes, we do. We also have a desktop computer for guests to use during their stay. Our area also has 4G wireless service available.

 

Q: What are the expected gratuities?

A: We don’t have a set figure. Our staff work very hard for every guest. The preferred and more personal way to tip is to present it to the staff individually and the ones you don't normally see, like the housekeeper and dishwasher, envelopes and a list of staff are provided.

 

Q: Do you store regular guest’s clothing?

A: Yes, we will store our regular guest’s clothing and other articles in our heated shop for future trips with us.

 

Q: Is there a hospital nearby?

A: The Soldotna Hospital is about 45 minutes away and the Homer Hospital is about 30 minutes away. We have a great Volunteer/Ambulance/EMT program available in the community. In addition, our captains, and some staff, are First Aid and CPR certified. Lastly, we also have the US Coast Guard in Homer.
